Good Vibes Only?

There is no denying that being positive and optimistic are important factors in being resilient. A bad attitude is a sure-fire way to defeat, and no one wants to be around someone who complains all of the time. But we need to make room for the hurts of life.

There is no denying that being positive and optimistic are important factors in being resilient. A bad attitude is a sure-fire way to defeat yourself, and no one wants to be around someone who complains all of the time. But we need to make room for the hurts of life. Suffering is just as much a part of life as joy is. When we tell people “Good vibes only” we are basically telling them that it is not ok to be sad even if there is a valid reason for feeling that way. We also hurt ourselves by suppressing our emotions. The key to successfully handling the hard things in life is being able to work through them and that can’t happen if we refuse to address them. There are times when “good vibes only” may apply such as at a party or a celebration. The ability to set aside your struggles to deal with at a more appropriate time is a valuable skill to have.  But as a general statement, “good vibes only” is not a healthy way to live.

This mindset can also be extremely harmful in relationships. If you are the one saying it, you are telling others that you are only interested in so far as it benefits you. Simply put, it’s selfish. You are telling people that it is not ok for them to be authentic around you.  This a guaranteed way to ruin relationships and lose friends.

With that being said, there are some people who have a “problem for every solution” and we are right to limit the amount of energy we give to such people. But more importantly, are you one of those people? If you struggle with always being in a bad mood or being pessimistic, you are stuck in a negative mindset. If you would like to work on developing a more balanced and healthier way of thinking, please reach out to me.
